It all started when Sega, Nintendo’s marketing rival,
wanted to create a cool new mascot for their company to surpass Nintendo’s Mario.
Developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima and Hirokazu then came up with the famous blue hedgehog we know today: Sonic the hedgehog,
with his original release date being on June 23rd 1991.
His fur is blue to represent the blue colour of SEGA's logo, and his shoes are red to represent his speed,
but also in reference to Micheal Jackson and Santa Claus (since Sonic is born in Christmas Island!)
Sonic didn't look like how he does today- he actually went through many design and name changes!
First off being a blue rabbit, commonly named "Feels" by the fandom.
Secondly being "Mr Hedgehog" or also known as "Mr Needlemouse" (a translation error to Mr Hedgehog)
who's design was getting closer to the Sonic we know of today.
Overall, Sonic's initial adventures was to run around the world and defeat the evil genius Eggman alongside with his buddy Tails.
Sonic is described as being free spririted, with the only thing he hates being oppression.
His personality tends to vary a bit depending on the games, shows or movies,
but he is overall described as being easygoing, honest, cool and carefree.
He has a short temper and tends to get bored easily, and always wants action going on!
Likes: chili dogs, adventure, rock music, running (obviously), sleeping/relaxing, showing off
Dislikes: Water (unable to swim), the word "slow", tears, oppression, waiting.

Miles Prower, a pun to "miles per hour" also commonly known as Tails the Fox, is Sonic's sidekick and best buddy.
Sonic met Tails while he was getting picked on by other fellow foxes for his two tails, which eventually became his nickname.
Sonic and Tails then became as close as brothers, with their bond being unbreakable.
Not only can Tails fly, he is also a mechanical genius who always help Sonic out when he's in trouble!
Likes: Peppermints, machines, planes, robots, hanging out with Sonic, fixing things.
Dislikes: Thunder, great heights, ghosts.

Knuckles is the guardian of the Master Emerald on Angel Island, and the only remaining living member of a big tribe of echidnas,
from which the Master Emerald belongs to. He started off as an antagonist,
who used to be one of Sonic's rivals, due to Eggman tricking Knuckles into thinking he's a foe who wants to steal the Master Emerald from him.
However, after learning that Eggman lied to him, Knuckles formed an alliance with Sonic,
while still keeping a slight sense of friendly rivalry.
Though he might seem tough and intimidating, Knuckles still has a good heart and hates to hurt innocent people.
Likes: Grapes, digging, the Master Emerald, peace and quiet, martial arts.
Dislikes: getting tricked, losing the Master Emerald, ghosts, coming off as weak.

Amy Rose's name, like for Miles Prower, is a pun to "amoureuse".
Formely known as "Rosy the Rascal" Amy's first arrival to the Sonic universe is getting kidnapped by Metal Sonic,
one of Eggman's robots. After being rescued by Sonic, Amy developped a crush on him
with her attraction being much more stronger than it is now during her first few years.
In the recent years, Amy has shown to be more mature and more independent, and prefers to give her love to the world.
Now she is more described as being in love with the concept of love itself, with Sonic being admiration.
Amy was originally meant to be the equivalent to Mario'S Peach or Mickey's Minnie,
but SEGA thought that Sonic having a girlfriend or love interest would contradict his character,
so they thought it would be more interesting if they made her crush mostly one sided.
Likes: sweets, pink, shopping, spending time with sonic, mystical things, fortune telling, hammers, spending time with friends.
Dislikes: getting bored, being left behind, ghosts, getting ignored.

Shadow the Hedgehog is an artificial hedgehog created on the Ark spacehsip by Gerald Robotnik, Eggman and Maria's grandfather,
in order to find a cure to Maria's disease. Shadow is created of Maria and Black Doom's DNA (Black Doom is offered his blood with one condition:
that after fifty years, Shadow brings the seven chaos emeralds (that, when all together, grants great force and power) back to him.)
Shadow is titled as the "Ultimate Lifeform" as he is more powerful than Sonic and his friends, as well as he is immortal. He develops a sisterly relationship with Maria,
since she's the only person who didn't view him as a dangerous weapon. Due to Shadow being too powerful, an agency called G.U.N invaded the Ark to capture Shadow.
Because she didn't want Shadow to get hurt, Maria placed him in a tube to propulse him on Earth, and protect it. Instead of Shadow getting killed, Maria did protecting him.
Her dying wish to Shadow is to protect the Earth. Shadow got frozen/in unconcious state for 50 years, until he arrive to Sonic's timeline.
He is Sonic's rival as he disagrees with some of Sonic's ways of doing things, but still, both still work together and care for each other.

Dislikes: Losing, people getting in his way, getting reminded of Maria's death

Dr Ivo Robotnik, most commonly known as Eggman, is Sonic's biggest ennemy. Eggman's plan is to rule the world to his image (for fun) and destroying some parts of it which is against Sonic's beliefs.
One of the other reasons Eggman hates Sonic so much is because the blue hedgehog doesn't take him seriously. To Robotnik, Sonic is his nemesis, while to Sonic, Eggman is just another bad egg.
One of Eggman's most recognizeable and loyal creations is Metal Sonic, programmed to capture and destroy Sonic. Metal opperates through Sonic's thoughts, and truly believes to be the "Real Sonic"
First appearances: June 23rd 1991 (Eggman), September 23 1993 (Metal). Eggman shares the same appreance date as Sonic and for Metal, the same as Amy's.
Silver the Hedgehog is about 200 years into the future from Sonic's timeline. After being manipulated by Mephiles, someone who he thought he could trust,
>telling him to kill Sonic in order to save the future they are living in. Because of this, Silver started off as one of Sonic's rivals.
Eventually, after discovering that the threat Mephiles was warning Silver about (also known as the "Iblis Trigger") was Mephiles all along, which cause Sonic and Silver to become allies against him.
Likes: Apples, justice, seeing others happy, the ocean, serving for the greater good.
Dislikes: injustice, evil, misinformation

Blaze: a firery princess from the Sol Dimension, considered to be the "Sonic" of her universe. With the power of the seven Sol Emeralds,
she grants similar powers to the ones Sonic, Shadow and Silver get from the 7 Chaos Emeralds. She is Silver's sidekick, similar to the relationship of Sonic and Tails.
In sonic 06, she is shown to have sacrificed herself, and sealed to another dimension. Though it's clearly comfirmed she didn't die due to her reapearing in other media, this scene is very sad to watch.
Likes: Ballet, her kingdom, being independent.
Dislikes: heights, relying on others, the cold, water

Rouge the Bat is a self proclaimed "world famous" jewel thief. Her goal is to successfully get in possession of the Master Emerald, (to Knuckles' despair)
She enjoys teasing him in all good fun and doesnt mean any wrong. She is one of Shadow's friends,
as they are in the same team together (team Dark) which is made of Shadow, Rouge and the robot Omega.
Likes: jewels, the Master Emerald, flirting/charming others, luxury, casinos
Dislikes: fake jewels, disorganisation, losing or giving up on gems

Random fact: I used to dislike her. I didn't like how actively obsessed she used to be with Sonic,
but in the recent years, she has become more independent and matured a lot. She cares about other people more rather than just Sonic,
which is a character development I like. I see myself a lot in her! That"s probably why she's my favourite.

Random fact: Shadow was my favourite for the longest time
Random fact: I also used to not like him that much. I used to think he was a shadow "ripoff",
but after discovering his character more, I saw that there's a lot more to him than just being serious. He's also a very goofy character. I think he's very cute now!
Random silly fact: she was my favourite when I first got into Sonic
Random silly fact: I used to mix knuckkes and Shadow up as a kid. And Tails also used to be my favourite at some point!
